Terrace, Kolkata
This private roof terrace in Kolkata subscribes to biophilic design principles, prioritises native planting, and borrows from the archetypal Japanese dry garden to create a space that is sensitive to ecology, and evokes a sense of peace and tranquillity.
Culms of bamboo emerging from a bed of grey pebbles to screen off the outside world, minimal planting, the lack of water, and wooden decking coalesce as an expression of zen. The banquette seating and coffee table set placed here provide an ideal nook to book to read in peace or catch up with an old friend.
Philodendrons and Rhapis palms enclose a narrow strip of lawn space, creating a calm outdoor studio space to practise yoga. A wooden platform foregrounding the screen of foliage serves as a seat for meditation. An artwork featuring a yin yang and koi fish carved into wood hangs on the slate grey façade of the built form, instilling strength, balance and serenity in users of the space.
A natural stone deck with playful level changes hosts minimalist white seating, a rich assortment of tropical favourites including the ever-delightful Frangipani and profusions of pink Bougainvillaea and a Madhu Malti cloaked classic gazebo that exudes old world charm. The use of indigenous species effectively creates a haven for local birds, bees, and butterflies.
On the whole, the terrace exemplifies the idea of simplicity as an ultimate form of luxury.
