Terrace, Mumbai |
Project Area : 3700 sq.ft

This airy South Bombay terrace had three clear zones to work with- two rectangular open spaces connected by a narrow passage with beautiful views out to the Arabian sea.

Passage

An antique mirror cladding has been chosen for the passage wall, so that the 280-degree sea view could be reflected onto it, exploiting the abundant natural light and making the once dreary corridor feel bright and spacious. A series of gorgeous white pedestals placed in the passage allow for a quick pit-stop to take in the breathtaking view with a glass of champagne.

Social Spaces

The key focus was to understand and design for the client’s lifestyle, ensuring that the space had a range of seating typologies that can adapt to varied social situations. Banquette seating against planters, sofa sets with an eclectic choice of cushion colours, static inbuilt high stools, a metal bar, and a catering counter make the space ideal for intimate family dinners, entertaining friends for coffee, and full-blown rooftop parties.

Plant Palette

From the ever-delightful frangipani to the tall, fragrant blades of pandanus, the planting palette for the terrace was carefully curated to include a rich mix of tropical species that tolerate salt spray. The foliage has been strategically used to screen off views of construction in surrounding buildings, and provides the ancillary benefit of creating a microclimate.

Artwork

An enjoyable challenge was incorporating artwork robust enough to endure the high-pressure winds on the thirtieth floor. Sculptor Swapnil Godase was commissioned to create a decorative ribbon-like installation with corten steel, whilst Alex Davis fashioned a metal façade of monstera leaves to complement the tropical planting.
